First Huskies in the Discovery Lab!

Today was "opening day" in the Husky Discovery Lab! Mrs. Frangiamore's third grade class came in to try out the new makerspace and it was a definite success!

The kids were able to "shop" for materials and take them on trays back to their work tables and see what they could create. Some worked indepently building with legos, and some naturally formed groups to take on a big build like making a marble run.

One group created a game using an ironing board as a ramp and tried to make their foam ball land in a coffee can. At first, they noticed the ball wasn't rolling, so they figured out that they needed to create a slope for gravity to do it's work. Then, they took turns rolling the foam ball down the "ramp". Sometimes, the ball would roll too far, other times, the ball would fall short of the "basket". They realized that when the ball traveled faster (maybe holding it higher up on the ramp than the previous time), the ball would go farther. It was a brief but very important lesson in physics.

You can see so much excitement as they're creating- they're proud to talk about their inventions and explain their process. There is a bright future for the Husky Discovery Lab and for the makers that visit!

A big thank you to all of the parents for donating materials! It wouldn't be a makerspace without all the great items you brought in for the kids! We hope to create an online "wish list" of items that we need throughout the year to replenish the supplies, fill specific requests from teachers, or for special projects we might have in the works. We hope you enjoy this online space as a way to observe your amazing kids at work!
